This unequaled home based beside beautiful Tamarama beach has just been awarded the prestigious Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture. The magnificent detailing, framed views and masterful plan to execute light leaves an enduring effect on all who experience it. We reveal why this piece of architecture is so powerful and why it will withstand the test of time.

A challenging site with limited light is made all that more complicated due to its exposure to the street and extreme weather. The masterful approach by firm Durbach Block Jaggers to set back the house several metres and sink the garage created a buffer from the elements, improved precious light and was a stroke of design genius. The house is curious, modest and reminiscent of a white Aegean cube. You experience the influence of master architect Le Corbusier in the use of materials, geometric forms and the beautiful play on light throughout.

The details are extraordinary and everywhere. The client understood the concept of ‘framing the view’ which meant important design features weren’t lost against the vista and revealed throughout the home. This three-storey home offers original floorspaces on all levels. The concrete spiral staircase is a spectacular feature and precisely winds around to each floor. The living room has double-height north-facing light, a private and protected garden at one end while views of the ever-evolving sea scape at the other.
